When it comes to business trips, one of the trickiest things to master is getting everything you need at the minimum. Maximizing minimalism, so to speak. Careful and detailed planning is important especially when you need to dress the part as an influencer, yet alone, as a representative of the company you work for. Of course, you cannot discount the fact that how you carry yourself in any business occasion speaks a lot of your character. You never know who you’ll be brushing elbows with. Antonio Centeno, founder of Real Men, Real Style offers his best advice in packing for a 7-day business trip.
First Things First: Choose the Right BagThere are about three bags to use when packing for a business trip. These are the hanger bag, the classic suitcase, and the duffel bag. The hanger bag is professional-looking and lightweight. It is a lot easier on dress shirts and suits. However, there’s not much storage space there. The traditional suitcase, on the other hand, has a lot of storage, portable and protects your clothes
Basic Things to Bring for the Week’s Business
A full-week is a challenge, especially for formalities and some mandatory socials. Antonio suggests the following items to cover the week’s needs:
- 2 suits (bring two colors to mix and match; usually charcoal gray and navy blue are reliable)
- 2 pairs of trousers
- 1 blazer or sports jacket
- 7 long-sleeved dress shirts (3 or 4 could be plain or light-patterned in white, while the others could have light colors for casual and evening settings)
- 1 dark, solid-colored polo shirt
- 2 pairs of dress shoes
- 2 dress belts that match the shoes
- 7 pairs dress socks (always consider that they should match each trouser color)
- 7 pairs underwear
- 5-7 neckties and pocket squares
- A Dopp kit for all your grooming and personal needs including medicines (all zipped up in a bag)
- Dark, solid-color swimsuit (well, you never know right?)
- Pajamas (but, of course!)
- During the winter or fall, you can opt to bring a wool overcoat just in case (wear it on the plane to save room)
- If you fancy a hat, just wear that one on the plane, too.
The Art of Loading the Suitcase
The goal, according to Mr. Centeno is, “no wasted space.” So, it’s important to systematically fill the suitcase up to the brim. The first layer should have the jackets and trousers. The second layer is for dress shirts and the last layer is for sundries.
